David Bates
David Bates (American 1952) is known for bold, expressive paintings, prints, and sculptures rooted in the cultural landscape of Texas. Bates’ style is instantly recognizable for its bold forms, dark outlines, and fusion of American Regionalism. A Dallas native, he earned his BFA and MFA from Southern Methodist University and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program. He has exhibited widely, including the Whitney Biennial, and received a major retrospective in 2014. He lives and works in Dallas.
