Carmelo Cappello
Carmelo Cappello (Italian 1912–1996) was an Italian-born American sculptor known for his innovative approach to modern abstraction. Born in Ragusa, Sicily, he immigrated to the United States as a child and later studied at the Pratt Institute in New York. Cappello developed a distinctive style characterized by geometric forms and interlocking shapes, often cast in bronze or aluminum. His work reflects an interest in balance, movement, and spatial relationships. A prominent figure in mid-20th-century American sculpture, he exhibited widely and received numerous public commissions. Cappello also taught for many years, influencing a generation of artists through his commitment to experimentation and design.
