Steve Kaufman
Steve Kaufman (American 1960–2010) was a pop artist, sculptor, and multimedia creator associated with the post–Warhol generation of American Pop Art. Born in the Bronx, New York, he studied at the School of Visual Arts and worked as an assistant to Andy Warhol at The Factory, where he developed his early exposure to silkscreen techniques and commercial imagery. Kaufman’s work drew heavily on iconic American imagery, rendered in bold color and graphic repetition. He was known for large-scale canvases, public murals, and philanthropic projects, and his practice extended into sculpture, stained glass, and film. Over his career, he became widely recognized for combining commercial aesthetics with social activism and high-visibility public art projects.
