Josep Maria Subirachs
Josep Maria Subirachs (Spanish 1927–2014) was a sculptor, painter, printmaker, and designer recognized as one of the leading figures of postwar Catalan art. Born in Barcelona, he trained under sculptor Enric Monjo while attending the Escola Superior de Belles Arts de Barcelona and later studied in Paris on a scholarship, where he encountered the European avant-garde and the work of Henry Moore. Although best known for the expressive sculptures of the Passion Façade of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Subirachs worked across numerous media, including printmaking and lithography. His evolving style ranged from Mediterranean classicism to abstraction and expressionism, exploring themes of form, symbolism, and the relationship between sculpture and architecture.
