James Watkins
James Watkins (American 1951) is a ceramic artist based in Lubbock, Texas, known for his large-scale sculptural vessels and innovative surface treatments in porcelain and clay. Raised in a farming family in Athens, Alabama, he earned a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Indiana University Bloomington. He later became a Horn Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Texas Tech University. Watkins is recognized for his double-walled ceramic forms and experimental firing techniques that incorporate metal oxides and surface fuming processes to create richly layered textures.
