JD Challenger
JD Challenger (American 1951-2023) was a painter whose work focused on the history, spirituality, and lived experience of the Native American people. Raised in Oklahoma and influenced early by his step-grandfather, a full-blood Choctaw, he later moved to the Southwest where he worked in landscapes before turning to figurative and narrative painting. Working in oils, acrylics, and watercolor, Challenger developed a deeply personal style shaped by his respect for Indigenous traditions. His paintings often explore ceremonies and reflect his belief that he served as a “messenger” for stories beyond his own experience.
