Latinos on Wheels: Lowrides of Tejas

Latinos on Wheels: Lowrides of Tejas celebrates the artistry, history, and cultural significance of lowrider communities across Texas. Through photography, Al Rendon documents the craftsmanship of customized cars alongside the people and traditions that sustain this vibrant culture.

Lowrider culture emerged in Mexican American communities in the Southwest during the mid-20th century, particularly in California, as an expression of identity, pride, and resistance. Defined by lowered vehicles, intricate paintwork, and hydraulic systems, lowriders transform automobiles into moving works of art while fostering strong community ties.

Based in San Antonio, Rendon is a renowned photographer known for documenting Chicano/a culture, Tejano music, and civil rights history. His work captures both the visual and personal stories behind these cultural movements, offering an intimate portrait of life, legacy, and expression on wheels.

This exhibition is on view at the Ellen Noël Art Museum in Odessa Texas, starting June 6 - November 29, 2026. Admission to ENAM is always free.
