Dieter Roth (German/Swiss 1930–1998), also known as Dieter Rot and Diter Rot, was a multidisciplinary artist whose work spanned artist’s books, printmaking, sculpture, and experimental materials. He studied in Zürich, where he developed an early interest in poetry and visual art while living among artists during World War II, and later co-founded the magazine Spirale and became associated with the Fluxus movement. Roth is known for radically expanding the idea of the art object, particularly through artist’s books that could be handled and reconfigured by viewers. His practice often incorporated found materials and organic substances, exploring processes of change, decay, and transformation as integral to the work itself.
