Nocona Burgess

Nocona Burgess (American 1969) creates bold, contemporary portraits of Indigenous men and women from across North America, blending careful research with personal insight and expressive color. His paintings combine vivid geometric forms with sharply defined features and traditional regalia, exploring identity, cultural context, and the evolving narrative of Native representation. A member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma and descendant of Quanah Parker, Burgess draws on a deep artistic lineage. He holds a BFA from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and a Master’s in Art Education from the University of New Mexico, focusing on reimagining the “modern Indian” through portraiture.
