Flag Workshop

Learn how to begin a small folk art flag project using simple applique and hand-stitching techniques. Appropriate for ages 13 and up or can be done as a family activity. All fabric and supplies provided. $5.00 per kit (registration in advance, please)

To grasp an event as enormous as September 11, 2001- at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, you start small. Simple objects that tell personal stories. The stories from New York, the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA. These stories deserve to be remembered across decades and generations. By telling them, we triumph over tragedy.

9/11 (2002); Jules and Gedeon Naudet (CBS); 112 minutes

Jules and Gedeon Naudet were in New York City at the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks.  They were filming a documentary on members of the Engine 7. Ladder 1 firehouse in Manhattan.  They captured the only clear footage of the first jet hitting the North tower of the World Trade Center.

These firefighters were the first responders on the scene and the filmmakers were allowed to continue filming the attempted rescue operation-going inside of Tower 1 when the 2nd Tower was hit.

Annita Delano Exhibition Opening

The Work of Annita Delano Exhibition Opening • 6pm • FREE

Annita Delano (1894 - 1979) became a leader of the modernist painting movement in California, both as a painter and a professor of art. In 1917, she earned her diploma from Los Angeles State Normal School (UCLA) and then began her teaching career at UCLA from 1920 to 1963.  From 1944 to 1946, she was on the faculty of the Otis Art Institute. She lived primarily in Los Angeles but was noted for her southwestern desert landscapes and Indians figure and genre.  Beginning 1925, she painted most summers in New Mexico and Arizona, living among the Hopi, Navajo, and Zuni Indians. Her paintings were widely exhibited during her lifetime, both as part of group shows and in 30 solo exhibitions of her work.

This exhibition showcases her lifetime of work including, paintings, watercolors and well as many sketches, artist notes and personal memorial.
