Mary Shaffer: Clear Vision, Reflections, Translucency & Glass
3/15/08-6/18/08
Shaffer pioneered slumped glass in the early seventies, which she used even then in association with found objects, but it is only one of a great many approaches she has taken to the medium. Having begun her career as a painter, she early on responded to the expressive appeal of glass and, not least, to its versatility. Working with every form of the material from fiber optics to monumental sheets of molten plate, she has fashioned intimate objects, narrative-driven room-sized installations, and fully abstract large-scale public commissions.

Art Guys: Cloud Cuckoo Land; Selections from 25 Years of Drawings, Proposals, Failed Schemes and Pipe Dreams 5/10 – 8/3, 2008
5/10/08 – 8/3/08
Michael Galbreth and Jack Messing are the creative collaborative team behind The Art Guys. For 25 years, this Houston based team has created a cross between performance and conceptual art, where generating playful ideas is the theme with many of their ideas going on to become anything from a performance piece to an installation in a museum. The final works are realized in a variety of media which are as plentiful as the ideas themselves. The idea for the art work came from a phrase Cloud Cuckoo Land, which refers to a Greek play, Aristophanes’ Birds. It is an idealistic place in the clouds, somewhere between heaven and earth. In this place anything and everything is possible.
